Comment on The Rhetoric of Intellectual Property by Majid Yar

Hi Jase. Thanks for discussing my paper on rhetorics of piracy. You're quite right that these sorts of legimtimating discourses for IP rights are now widespread. Developments since I wrote the paper have furthered the hold of these views, and they are increasingky enshrined in policy making.

I'm now working on a (much delayed) book about intellectual property and the information society - it's kind of a critical criminology that tries to unpack the dynamics of crime and criminalisation in information capitalism around intangible property.

As for this:

Curiously enough - while Googling Prof. Yar I noticed that his earlier paper on film piracy has found it way onto the torrent networks. I have a feeling that would amuse him. (Although perhaps not Sage publishing who no doubt own the copyright for Yar's intellectual labour.

I find it very amusing, and very heartening. One thing publishers never get is the oddness of their positions. For example, for the pice you mention, I of course was required to sign a copyright assigment form (!). For an artcicle whose whole point was to reject the legitimacy of claims to have rights over intangible 'properties'. So, only participaing in copyright would allow me to publish the view that I don't want to participate in copyright! So, ending up on a Torrent is the most fitting punchline I can imagine!

Keep up the good work - I'll enjoy reading more posts as they appear...
