New paper on gamers on Twitter

Following on from my posting about Under the Mask 2011 and the publishing of the slides from my presentation there I’ve managed to finish a written draft of the paper I presented as the academic keynote speaker. I’d been asked by a number of people at the conference (and those following the Twitter feed) for a copy of it so in an attempt to get it out there as soon as possible here it is. I am sure there are still plenty of typos and other signs of rapid workmanship but it gives a flavour of the points I...

Looking ‘Under the Mask’

At the beginning of June I was given the opportunity to give the academic keynote address at the annual conference ‘Under the Mask: Perspective on the Gamer‘ at the University of Bedfordshire in Luton. This was a really enjoyable event to go to – and indeed, my first games conference for some time. It was great to see that while there was an enthusiasm for playing games amongst the delegates, the work presented successfully worked at placing gaming within a broader cultural context. As the events organiser, Alison Gazzard had brought together an engaging mix of people with some...

Moral Panics presentations

Based on a chapter I’m currently finishing for a book on the morality and digital games I’ve recently been asked to present on games and moral panics. The first was a research seminar at The Faculty of Education at Anglia Ruskin University and more recently at the Research Group for Media & ICT (MICT) at the University of Ghent. The slides for both of these are now available on my Slideshare account for viewing and download. There is obviously some overlap between the two presentations – but the slides from Ghent are probably more understandable on their own and...

Presentation on Open Access publishing in academia

Last weekend  (16th-18th April) saw the inaugural meeting of the Pirate Parties International. Taking place in Brussels, the event started of with a tour of the European Parliament along with a talk from the Swedish MEP and Pirate Party member, Christian Engström, and a presentation from me. As is so often the case in such situations things didn’t go exactly to plan and I was left without a projector. However, I’m quite please with the look of the slides so I’ve given them a second chance and popped them on Slideshare for the world to see. The presentation is...
